We combine emergency care with regular day practice. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We are here for our clients and their pets at all hours of the day and night and this is what drives our popularity and our success. We blend the dual roles of emergency room, and family doctor.

We have arranged our practice environment to be soothing and welcoming to the pet owner; we try to help them understand the possible costs of care and the potential outcomes. And we provide the best medical care that we are able to provide given the pet’s condition and owner’s circumstances. Below are the services we offer.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

A regular physical examination is just as important for your pet as it is for you. Our veterinarians recommend a complete physical examination for your pet at least once, and perhaps twice a year. During a physical examination, your veterinarian will listen to your pet’s heart and lungs, evaluate your pet’s vision, look for any unusual lumps or swelling and check your pet’s teeth and oral cavity, among other procedures.

Routine examinations give your vet an opportunity to develop a picture of your pet’s overall health. Examinations are also essential in spotting problems before they become serious health issues. During an exam, your veterinarian may also talk to you about home healthcare for your pet. An examination is also a good time for your pet to get up-to-date on his or her vaccinations.

IN HOUSE LABORATORY

Our in house laboratory provides quick patient-side results while you wait. We can do in house blood testing to evaluate internal organ health, electrolytes, and red and white blood cell counts, as well as test for clotting abnormalities.  We can check blood types and make sure transfusions are unlikely to result in reactions.  We can check for feline viruses and viral diarrheas in dogs and cats all within minutes!

Faster answers = faster decisions = faster action to getting your beloved pet back to health!

DIGITAL RADIOLOGY SYSTEM

Our digital x-ray system and paperless medical records decrease the amount of waste and contamination to our community and to our planet. Once the digital images are taken, they are uploaded to our central server, where they can be viewed at any site in the hospital.  These images are also archived offsite in 2 different locations, as a further security measure.

Did you know we also take digital radiographs of your pet’s mouth when we do a complete oral health assessment as part of your pet’s dental cleaning procedures?  Dental radiographs are essential to look below the gumline at the condition of the roots and bone.  We find many health issues when we use digital radiology as another tool in our dental assessment and treatment procedures.

HEALTH CERTIFICATES – FOR TRAVEL BETWEEN THE STATES AND INTERNATIONALLY

Our doctors are accredited by the United States Department of Agriculture to write both domestic and international health certificates.  Our microchips are ISO compliant, meaning they are able to be used for international travel.  Our clients and their pets are world travelers and we have written health certificates to Hawai’i, Australia, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Israel.  In many cases, potential quarantine issues affect the timelines for your pet’s travel, so it is best, when traveling internationally, to contact the consulate for your pet’s destination, to obtain the latest information.  In all cases, Rabies inoculations will need to be up-to-date.

Animal movement between the states is also regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture, and each state has differing regulations regarding the intervals between Rabies inoculations.  Our doctors write health certificates for domestic pet travel between the states.

MICROCHIPPING

Microchips are a form of identification that emits a unique identifier when activated by a small radiofrequency field.  The chips are implanted under the skin, in the fat and tissue over the shoulders, and are biologically inert.   The advantage to microchips is that, unlike collars and ID tags, the microchip can never be inadvertently lost or removed from the pet.

We use ISO compliant microchips that operate on a radiofrequency that is recognized in Europe and the United States.

The animal shelters within Los Angeles County DO scan pets with the scanner and DO return pets back to their owner when the pet is found.  Animal clinics are obligated to scan found pets and contact the owner identified in the centralized database.  The legal owner of the pet is the person identified in the database.

VACCINATION

Vaccination is an important medical procedure.  Many of the vaccines still in use in many veterinary practices were developed in the 1950’s and 1960’s and not changed since!  At Beverly Oaks, we only use the top of the line vaccines, developed recently in accordance with you pet’s safety and health in mind.  Whenever possible, we follow extended vaccine intervals of 3 years.  We don’t vaccinate, and don’t suggest that you vaccinate, against conditions that are not prevalent in the local area, or against conditions that your pet doesn’t need.

FLEA CONTROL

Flea control has come a long way from the days of flea baths and flea sprays and flea collars.  We stay a step ahead and keep up with the latest developments in flea control products so that your pet stays happy and comfortable, with the fewest possible opportunities for fleas to bite and create an itchy dermatitis.

SURGERY

Our doctors are very skilled at a broad variety of surgical techniques, from spays (ovariohysterectomy) and neuters (castration) to more advanced techniques such as Bloat Surgery (correction of Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus).

In addition, for specialized orthopedic and soft tissue surgical procedures, we can offer our clients and pets access to consultations and surgeries with a veterinary surgical specialist, who will perform the procedure on site, in a new, special surgical suite.  This offers you the convenience of specialize care on-site, in one trip, in your local neighborhood.

ULTRASOUND SERVICES

We use a variety of mobile ultrasound providers, each of whom come to Beverly Oaks  to provide on-site advanced imaging services, when these services are needed to help delve deeper into the causes of a pet’s illness.  Radiographs, for example, compress the 3 dimensional patient into a flat 2 dimensional image rendered in varying shades of grayscale.  Oftentimes the gray doesn’t allow you to see differences in the tissue density.  Ultrasonography bounces soundwaves against the tissues and the differences in the tissue are then able to be observed.  This helps diagnose fluid in the abdomen, or cysts in an organ, or a tumor in a tissue-dense structure such as the liver.

BEHAVIOR SERVICES

The importance of puppy and kitten socialization is an under-recognized aspect of puppy and kitten development, resulting in dogs and cats with fears and anxieties that manifest as behavioral problems later on in life.  We have teamed up with the exceptional staff at KARMA DOG TRAINING to provide puppy socialization and dog training (and owner understanding).  KARMA trainers employ rewards-based training techniques, NOT PUNISHMENT BASED.  Punishment based techniques have been shown to increase fear and anxiety, and are not encouraged by veterinary professionals.

DENTISTRY

Periodontal disease is the most common ailment of dogs and cats.  Regular home care and professional treatment are the first and best means of preventing and combating this problem.

Anesthesia-free methods DO NOT provide the opportunity for thorough cleaning or for proper examination of the oral cavity.  Anesthesia-free handscaling etches the tooth, setting up a matrix upon which new bacteria and saliva and food particles can take root more easily.  Anesthesia-free handscaling does not clean under the gum line, nor the interdental space, nor the inside of the teeth—along the inner arcade and anesthesia-free handscaling allows bacteria to gain entrance into the blood stream when the gums are nicked with the dental tool. The American Veterinary Dental College position paper on anesthesia free tooth scaling states that “Removal of dental tartar on the visible surfaces of the teeth has little effect on a pet’s health, and provides a false sense of accomplishment.  The effect is purely cosmetic.

Inhalation anesthesia using a cuffed endotracheal tube provides three important advantages…the cooperation of the patient with a procedure it does not understand, elimination of pain resulting from examination and treatment of affected dental tissues during the procedure, and protection of the airway and lungs from accidental aspiration.”

While the California Veterinary Practice Act prevents non-veterinarians from performing dental cleanings and scaling, even within the profession there is a great variability.  Having a veterinarian supervise non-anesthetic dental procedures done in a grooming parlor, or a boarding facility, offers minimal, if any, benefit over a non-veterinarian performing this procedure.  The net result is still, a “ false sense of accomplishment.  The effect is purely cosmetic. “

In keeping with the recommendations from the American Animal Health Association, the American Veterinary Dental College, and our personal ethical interpretation to practice medicine to the highest standard, we perform complete oral health assessments, treatments, and planning on anesthetized pets.  Under the appropriate anesthetic protocol for your pet, with intravenous fluids delivered at all times during anesthesia, we clean and scale the entire tooth-the inner surface, the outer surface, between the teeth, and under the gumline.  We note and chart and problems with the tooth and gums in that area, and we take radiographs to evaluate for disease under the gum line.  The pet is provided with antibiotics and pain relief, because by the time we see most of these patients, there is significant periodontal disease present.  Our doctors and registered veterinary technicians are skilled in dental cleaning and polishing, radiology and radiology interpretation, appropriate dental charting, and appropriate anesthesia management

EMERGENCY SERVICES

We have a doctor and technician on site all night long to see your pet in the event of an emergency.  Our doctors are well-versed in trauma management, emergency surgical management, and routine well-patient care.  Our emergency team works with local veterinary practices to ensure your pet receives cohesive care between your regular veterinary care provider and the emergency team, and between a specialty care provider and our emergency team, as needed.  Put 818-788-7860 on your speed dial to ensure speedy access to our care!

GROOMING

Baths, haircuts, nail grinding, teeth brushing, and specialty shampoos-all are  secrets to a pampered pet!” Noelle, our groomer, is extremely skilled and often brings pet’s skin and ear health problems to our attention, or to the owner’s attention, so that the pet can receive any needed care.  A clean, well-groomed pet, outfitted with neckerchiefs or bows, brings delight to everyone!

SENIOR PET CARE

Aging dogs and cats are an important part of our patient population and, since the 1980’s, veterinary medicine has been learning more and more about how to care for their needs.  Our doctors are very skilled at recognizing the various conditions that happen as our pets age, and the interrelationships between organ systems, and medications, that occur.  We have a great referral relationship with various specialists that deal with conditions seen more frequently in the older pet, including cancer specialists, internal medicine specialists, and rehabilitation specialists for arthritis management.

Office visits every 6 months, monitoring of the blood panel for changes that may be associated with any medications the pet is taking, and good communication is key to keeping the senior pet feeling as well as possible through the aging process.  We consider ourselves lucky to be in a position where our clients want us to take incredible care of their pet.
